KAGEN GIVES  NIAGARA  A  NATIONAL  VOICE

February 25, 2008

Washington, DC -- Congressman Steve Kagen, M.D. has given the people of Niagara, Wisconsin a national voice today by launching “Wisconsin Speaks – Real Stories from Real People”, a series of videos on his congressional website where constituents speak their minds.

Four of these stories from Niagara are featured, including George, Faith, Sam and Shawn, and they can be seen at www.kagen.house.gov.

“It is an honor and privilege to represent everyone in the 8th District and to be able to give their voices an opportunity to be heard,” said Kagen.  “I want everyone in America to know exactly why our jobs in Niagara are being shipped overseas, for as Niagara goes, so goes our nation.”

On January 16, it was announced that The NewPage Corporation, the company that purchased the paper mill in Niagara, will shut it down.  319 people stand to lose their jobs which will have a significant effect on the community of 1,880.

Congressman Kagen and Congressmen Tom Petri and Bart Stupak of Michigan convened a meeting today between federal legislators, state officials and executives of The NewPage Corporation.

"Through no fault of their own, Niagara families may lose not only their jobs, but their very way of life,” said Kagen.  “Let's put an end to the unfair trade laws and illegal dumping of Asian paper into our domestic markets by China, South Korea and Indonesia. Let's ship our values overseas - not our jobs.”

In a recent visit to Niagara, Kagen vowed to help provide assistance and to combat the unfair trade policies that have provoked this devastating situation.

“I appreciate all the things Congressman Kagen is trying to do for us up here,” said George Hohol, who worked in the Niagara paper mill for over 40 years.  George’s story can be found at kagen.house.gov

The Wisconsin Speaks series will continue to present the voice of people across Northeast Wisconsin.
